The front wipers on my '95 Aerostar have mostly quit. The pushbutton on the end of the stalk still makes 'em cycle a couple of sweeps, but the rotary switch does nothing. Prior to this, the first few delay positions were dead but the rest worked.
Has anyone run into these symptoms? Couldn't find 'em in the search...
That's the first problem I ever had with my Aero. Had to replace the stalk which means the wheel and airbag must come off.
If you get a new one, pay particular attention to the connector. There are different parts available.
the cap on the end of the stalk comes off.
clean the variable resistor/rheostat inside that powers the wipers.
then spray with silicon spray to lube.
search Aero forum for variable wiper for full detailed directions
The cap pried off with a small screwdriver, which exposed a Phillips screw head. Removing the screw let the control **** slide off, which let a small spring (with smaller end caps) drop out of the stalk. One cap vanished. Not much to see inside and no contact cleaner on hand. Couldn't get the spring, which provides detents for the switch positions, back in correctly. Without it, the **** turns freely over its range, which doesn't matter because the switch still doesn't work. Time to let an actual mechanic put in a new switch. Thanks for the replies though...
