There are hundreds of threads dealing with how/when to use the various functions on the ESOF 4WD system. However, I'll give you the Reader's Digest condensed version.
1. ESOF = Electronic Shift On the Fly
2. Switch to 4WD at any speed up to 55mph when travelling in a straight line. Flipping the switch electronically activates the transfer case and lock the hubs in via an vacuum pulse.
3. Use 2x4 most all the time.
4. Use 4LO in extreme circumstances such as deep snow/mud/rocks, pulling out stuck vehicles and such or when you need more grade braking. (not all situations)
5. Use the hub locks if the ESOF fails to lock your hubs, if you are stuck and cannot get enough rotation of the front wheels to lock (it takes 1/2- full revolution).
Don't use it on dry surfaces when attempting tight turns.
You should be able to lock the hubs w/o 4WD activated and NOT get the binding you experienced.
