Anyone tell me the steps needed to install my heater core , in my 71 F100?
It is leaking and I have the new one--but have not installed one for 30 yrs. I usually am ok with this stuff, but it will be cold tomorrow and my 71 is outside and I want to fix this before the snow flies!
Drained the antifreeze already and want an easy job of this.....thank you
Bill
pull the hoses on the firewall and drop the heater from under the dash. Stick the new one in, rehang, and reconnect. Piece o cake, should be done in less than an hour.
Ya, as long as you don't have under dash heat/air unit(with glovebox in it), you'll be done in no time.
There's about 10 screws to take cover off heater, slide out heater core(after taking hoses off under hood) then reverse procedure.
I had a truck with that underdash unit and it was a freak'n disaster. The std under dash isn't bad, but the big one with heat and a/c in it is impossible. The heatercore is in the back of the unit and the only access is dismantling the entire unit. A simple hole in the back would have been nice!
Hey Freightrain, tell me more about removing that underdash unit. I took out all the small screws today thinking that I could split it to replace my blower motor, but it seems to want to stay together. I read in another thread that there are 3 bolts through the firewall that will drop it out, and then it can be split on the bench? Do you remember?
there is a bolt on the back of the unit holding it to the firewall. inside the little glovebox is 2 screws going through holding the duct together near the blower motor. a few other misc 5/16 screws and you can completely dismantle it. i did on my workbench and refurbished the weatherstrip foam in the door that separates heat compartment from ac compartment and cleaned everything out. heat blows hot and ac will be working better soon hopefully due to a new nonclogged expansion valve thanks to bill.
