so its on the passenger side closest to the bumper. i always pull the plug and place my thumb on the hole. when youre rotating the motor with a 15/16 socket you will feel it compress. that compression stroke is what you want to be tdc of. ready to go bang and fire the charge.
a friend helped me swap mine out and the difference afterwards is night and day. be sure to have a harmonic balancer or steering wheel puller handy because chances are its never been off, and it will sure be stuck after 40 years. you'll know when you find the plastic teeth on the stock gears that are chipped away and the loose as a goose chain.
Totally different design.
Look closely at that balancer, it may be defective.
Balancers are assembled from three different parts, outer pulley, inner damper, and...
Between those two parts is a rubber collar.
During assembly, the rubber collar is placed between those two parts, then the three parts are pressed together.
Over time, the rubber shrinks from age, cracks, then the outer pulley walks away from the inner damper.
When that occurs, a vibration results and if not replaced, the pulley can come completely apart from the damper and impact the radiator core.
The good news is, the 1965/67 balancer has been reproduced.
