I just picked up a copy of the magazine entitled ''Shelby", it seems very interesting describing where he started from to what he`s doing today. He turned 85 this year and seems to be still going strong.
It would have been great to have worked for him through out the years, alot of neat cars came out bearing his name.
It was in the London Drugs magazine stand, I think I may have gotten the last copy afew days ago.
I could check around for another one if you like but unfortunately I haven`t since seen any more copies of it anywhere else. Maybe try London Drugs, one of the major magazine/newspaper outlets or book stores.
Carroll Shelby, quite a guy. I was quite a fan of European sports cars when I was a teenager. Back in the '60's the idea of taking a Euro sports car and squeezing in an American V8 was quite a fad for awhile. The Italians had cars like Iso-Rivoltas that had 327 Chevy V8's, Jensen Interceptors were British with Mopar 383/440's in them, Arnolt-Bristol had Chevy V8's, etc..
But Carroll Shelby's idea of taking probably one of the most timeless and beautifully styled cars of all time....the AC Roadster, putting a V8 in it, tweaking the car to handle the extra power.
I believe he tried to interest Chevy to sell him small block V8's...327's....but they turned him down. They thought they would be cutting into their Corvette market.
Shelby approached Ford and Henry the 11 agreed to supply the new lightweight, compact in dimensions Ford V8. First in the 260 , then the 289.
What a combo...modern, new, lightweight, hi revving and powerful Ford V8 into one of the most lithe and stunningly attractive bodies.
I never saw a real one, in the flesh until I was about 20, but I did see plenty of pictures before hand.
Now of course the AC Cobra, powered by Ford is quite a popular replica. Replica or real, it has to be one of the best automotive ideas ever developed.
