Greets to all,
For those that keep up, I got a compression gauge in today that has the right glow plug adapter and so far I've check 2 cylinders on my passenger bank, 3 & 5. 3 is just below 300psi and 5 is at a whopping 0psi (not a typo). Maybe this is linked to the loud BANG that happened as my engine bit the dust. comments?
PS I already bought a 2ton cherry picker and 1ton engine stand.
yeah, with loud bank I'm beginning to think a piston gave way. Don't know why, it wasn't running that great to begin with. Anybody have any ideas, and how many threaten my re-use of the block?
You won't know until the block is out and tore down. If you just punched a hole in the piston top, you may be OK but there might have been a lot of metal in the cylinder to score the you-know-what out of the walls. I have re-used old blocks (gassers) in the past for rebuilds after pistons let go and just bored them out.
#2=410PSI
#4=360PSI
#6=410PSI
#8=Cant get the plug out the hole.
Don't these things have aluminum pistons i seem to remember hearing. Mines an early 99 BTW. I'm just thinking out loud here, I wasn't doing anything but daily driving when it gave way, so I have this horrible suspension that if the motor was dusted, it may not be what caused this catastrophic failure. Maybe that bad injector that was in that hole was the culprit, it has a new one now. Oh well, I'll start tear down this weekend probably.
190 psi on #7 doesn't look good either. Yes, they are aluminum pistons but if someone ran the motor nice and hot (high EGT's) it could have weaken the piston metal and created a soft spot to break. You probably got some garbage in the pan as well.
