I need some input guys. I got this weird problem with my truck. I went over a bump today and it was like the brakes let go all at once. The pedal went down 1/4 of the way and the brakes took hold again. After I came to a complete stop, i left off the pedal and pressed it again. Everything was fine. I drove around all day and everything was normal. This evening on my way home, I went over a bump (construction area) and the same thing happened again.
My initial thought was MC, but now I am leaning more towards the PS pump. I have had this grinding noise. After I stop, I hear it when slowly letting off the brakes. After this happened today, I applied the brake while sitting in park and got the same noise while turning the wheel from left to right. No noise otherwise.
I replaced all my pads, rotors and bearings a while back. I priced a replacement PS pump and it's not bad. I haven't flushed the current pump, and figure if I am going to do that, I will just replace it.
What do you guys think? Thanks in advance for your input!
if you went fast enough with brake depressed your ABS might have kicked in and thats what happens the pedal runs away a little, cause if you wheels locked up has to let them turn. try to go over the same bump but slower, that might be one of the explanations, and i hope the easy one too...
good luck David, let us know what it was.
well grinding nois might be another story , but the abs and pedal might be.
you can do a test on your driveway, lift the back of your truck by a pumpkin as high as it will go, have your buddy release it as fast as it will drop while you holding a brake and see if it happens than, 2nd test you can do while on D just let the wheels roll for a ittle and do it again... you might be able to recreate the problem.
Sounds to meh like ABS also....as for the whinning P/S...if u find a fix....please TELL ME!!
STP (honey stuff) always shuts mine up. It's been well over a year since the last time I had to put some in, and it doesn't take much at all.
As for recreating the issue, all I have to do is go over a bump while applying the brake. I just went for a little drive and found something out.
If I am up to speed a little (~20mph) and I slam the brakes hard, my front wheels lock and skid and then about a second later, it does the same thing like it does when I go over a bump. I am thinking ABS now too- but why would it do it going over a bump?
well when you go over the bump and you rear wheels lift off, the pressure of the pedal makes the wheels stop and once they hit the ground they start rolling again, so the diference between front rolling and rear stopped makes ABS kick in....it senses like you rear is skidding....thats the reason i hated this system on my van....
David..did adding the STP cure the performance issues also?
I know for a fact since mine has been whining my brakeing ability has gone down i say 1/4 of what it used to be. Also vibration in the brake pedal/steering wheel.
I looked at napa for STP....all i found was fuel treatment.
My truck only has rear abs...and if i hit a few little bumps just right when im braking it sets the abs off also...just nature of the beast i guess.
My stupid ABS hasthis problem for about a week at a time on occasion- I don't know WHY, but it always goes away. I have had some really close calls because it wouldn't let me stop. The trick is to quick take your foot off the pedal and mash it back down- that resets it so you can actualy stop....
