Hey guys, I have a problem I hope someone can help me with. I have a 83 Bronco that I just got and I love it. My problem is I had a little hesitation when I put it in gear in the morning when the tranny was cold. Not a big deal, once it went into gear it was fine. Anyway yesterday I checked the tranny fluid and noticed it was a little low so I headed down to the auto parts store to get some tranny fluid and saw some Lucas oil that said it would help with the slip. Anyway after I put this in, the transmission will not shift out of first and is slipping bad. If I shift it into first, it is fine and I can up shift into second and also fine but when I shift into drive it slips and drops back down to first. I called Lucas oil and they said that what it did was clean out the tranny and the gunk that was in there was what was keeping it working well. I have talked to the guy at Pep Boys to flush this stuff out and he told me the same thing as the guy at lucas. Has anybody had this problem and if so what did you have to do? Thanks for your help.
well at this point you should probably get the tranny serviced with new fluid and filter change. sounds like your driving a C6 so you might also check your vacum modulator and confirm the vac lines are good and not cracked. if after the service the tranny doesnt improve figure on either a rebuild or locateing a used tranny. the C6 is a strong tranny and a rebuild is usually pretty cheap for those.
If I were you, I would change the fluid (Including the T/C) and filter. Run it about twenty miles and change it again. See how it goes after that. Mine had similar problems after service and I had to change it twice more. I was ready to go the rebuild route, but didnt have the time right then. So I just kept driving it. Now it seems to work good almost all of the time. It may be just borrowed time.
The crud that accumulates inside the tranny over the years tends to make things sticky which isn't always a good thing. But over time it keeps loose worn parts from slipping and rattling around.
Sounds like the Lucas did the hard part for you. It cleaned out the crud. Now its time to service the thing so it shifts properly with the proper viscosity fluid in it. If its slipping after being cleaned then the worn parts need service. There is no going backwards on this one. What's been done isn't damage but will lead to it if the tranny isn't serviced soon. Kem is right about the C6... its probably the most rugged auto Ford ever put in these trucks and the most commonly available so service and parts for it aren't too crazy expensive.
teh first and only time i used a tranny treatment i drove it for about 2 hours aftwerwards and stoped at a stop light and herd a big bang.... after that all i had left was reverse..... got some funny looks as i was driving down the street backwards.... Never used it again....
That's what happens to an automatic that is never serviced and suddenly gets flushed. Everything that has settled in and the crud that has been keeping things stuck together gets removed and allows the real problems that have developed from years of neglect to rear their ugly heads.
Well after looking at many different options, I found a rebuild kit for my C6 for $80.00 and a friend of mine that's a mechanic is gonna rebuild it for $100.00 so not to bad in the end I have a fresh tranny that I shouldn't have to worry about it for awhile.
Well I got the Tranny rebuilt, I found a rebuild kit online for $120.00 and pulled the tranny myself and a friend rebuilt it for me for $150.00. So not counting the beer, it all cost me around $300.00. I think it was well worth it. According to my friend, that tranny was on its last leg.
