I have an '88 F250 4X4 with the 7.3l non-turbo diesel. I don't know exactly howbut ji managed to break the passenger side front axle shaft off inside the pumkin. I have pulled it all apart and cleaned everything up but I cannot find a new or used axle. This truck has the Dana 60 front axle and no one seems to have the part I need. Can anyone help me locate an axle?
Do you know how to tell one from the other?
If you don't it's really easy for one of us to tell you how to identify it.
I'm asuming since you even know about a Dana 60 you can.
It's your first post so were not sure how "advanced" your knowledge is.
And we don't care, if your new to trucks don't worry about asking "dumb" questions.
Here are links to the three most common axles Ford used from the Dana Librarian.
Full info on identification and servicing the axles in .pdf files.
You need Acrobat Reader to open them though, Acrobat Reader can be downloaded for free if you don't have it on your computer.
You were right and i was a little confused...my truck has the 50...i was also wondering if it is worth the time money and effort to convert it to a live axle. also if i am going to go that route, what is needed to do that kind of a job, not tools but parts.
If you get your axle with the track-bar and bracket attatched it'll bolt right in.
IMO it would be one of the best upgrades you could do.
I don't know how much money or time you have but the cheapest way to get a Dana 60 is to buy a whole donor F-350 and swap everything then sell the donor F-350 with your Dana 50 in it instead.
Take a quick look under the DONOR before you buy it and make SURE it has a Dana 60 in it.
I've seen them sit on Craig's List here for 700 bucks but I'm SURE it's a regional thing. 1500 seems to be the "national" average.
If you buy an F-350 right, swap everything and resell the truck you might get it for free. Or close to it.
awesome! thanks guys...i found a guy that i work with that has an 88 f-250 4x4 with the 4 doors. he has a rear axle, a front live axle, and a 6" lift kit with all the parts needed, but the shocks are shot (no big deal) and i am gonna buy the works this week for $300. i think that 2 dana 60s and lift for that price is a great deal. Thanks again for all the help!
BE CAREFULL!
An '88 4-door (CrewCab) should be an F-350 (1-Ton) so make sure you're getting what you think you are.
If everything is right that's a KILLER deal!
I've never heard that term either... 1800 bucks is the going rate for a D60 waaaay up here in canada... got mine for 1500 and the rest of the truck with it...
