Has anyone else had problems with installing new ignition switch and cylinder on your trucks? The whole cylinder keeps pulling out when turning the key and the ingition switch housing keeps spinning. Purchased new cylinder and switch from LMC (regretfully for save cost, shoud have went to Dennis Carpenter) Both my uncle and I have gone round and round with this but with no results. Using the directions for install from original truck manual. Any help would be great.
Turn the key to accessories, insert paper clip, or something simular, in the small hole on the face of the key cylinder and turn counter clockwise, the cylinder should come out. Need to follow same process in installing, kinda like preloading the cylinder assembly, or the cylinder will fall out. Also, hold the bezel from the front and turn the switch from the back, prevent scratching the paint.
Anyone know how to get the cylinder out w/o the key?
I would think a good lock smith could make you a key, and from there you could use it to replace your tumbler. Other wise without distroying it I am not sure what you could do. You can not twist the bezzel off until you get the tumbler out.
Mine was worn out when I started my project 10 years ago but I was lucky and still had a key. I was also lucky to be able to purchase an entire lock and tumbler set from my local Ford dealer in Montana. I am not sure, but I do not think you can get it from them anymore. I had the doors and keyed alike.
Attempted couple of times, not very successful. Used a drill thru center of the cylinder, started w/ small drill and worked up, problem is making sure don't drill too deep, cylinder has a pin that sets inside a channel at the bottom of the switch housing that locks the cylinder inside the switch, and then there's the issue of not using too large of drill and damage the interior walls of the ign. switch. Likely end up having to replace both but drilling the cylinder out is probably easiest way to remove the switch w/out causing too much damage.
Would need a mobile locksmith with experience of working on vintage locks, if fortunate to find one, cost home visit may be more than the $60-$70 to replace, most Ford parts suppliers carry the kits.
