Loud DMF

Does a bad DMF just make noise or will it eventually let loose? My DMF is loud but I need this truck every day hard to put it in the shop, might have to go through the winter with a loud DMF........

They will rattle for a while. All you can do is try to make it.

Can you hear it at idle? Our work will get into these fits like something is knocking real bad at idle, it actually shakes the whole truck.

Give it a little fuel and it goes right away. I'm pretty sure it still has a DMF. The odometer stopped a couple 100k ago so I'm not even sure how many miles it has on it.

Ya that's the kind of info I am looking for, it tells me that if the ballbearings can fall out that the whole darn thing can let loose and cause even more damage............ I got to get this DMF done, friggin down time on a work truck is killer .....

Thanks Neal........ btw do you have any pics of the bad DMF?

No I don't sorry. That was my first one from the factory. I do have a DMF that is still in fair shape if you want it. I just pulled it out to go SMF. Has about 60,000 on it. I doubt you do but there is the offer. It would cost a mint to ship due to the weight.

Also I really don't think my bearings fell out. I believe they were eaten up. Dry as a bone in there and talk about the rusty dust! WOW!

Neal thanks for the offer on the DMF I 'll pass cause I already have a Valaire clutch package on the bench just have to put it in,,,,, Kinda actious to get the DMF out not only because of the shakes, but also just to see what this kind of flywheel looks like <<<I can't even imagine it and can't imagine why Ford would try something new when the conventional way is darn near bullitt proof.......

Finally! Y'all finally gave me enough clues that I was able to figure out it was "Dual Mass Flywheel." I'm gonna learn all this code someday.

Picture a flexplate with for an auto with a flywheel strapped to it with springs. That's what it looks like.

Got my Valaire clutch kit in ,,,,,,,,,,, and wow what a differance nice and smooth no more shakes, even idles better........ Should have do this long ago the DMF is really bad, like Neals it lost 1/2 of the ball bearings and also there is a little more than 3/4 of an inch play in other words if the fly wheel is held stationary the ring gear side can turn CW or CCW 3/4 of an inch,,,,,, I so surprised this never gernaded it self, had know idea it wouldbe so bad.......The Valaire clutch seems good and like Dan at Valire said its loud at an idle in neutral and also loud if ya let the rpms drop too low for the gear your in,,,,,,

When I did mine I put 5 quarts in the tranny. That made it a bit more quiet also. You have to fill it thru the shifter though.

I think I heard somewhere that if you put ATF in the tranny it will run quieter. Its loud too , sounds a lot like a dump body PTO for a work truck its ok but if this were my daily driver it would bug me bad but not as bad as the DMF did....... Do you have any tranny leaks from the extra quart? I am thinking the driveshaft seal might be a spot to leak when over filled........
