I have a 93 F150 4x4 that I'm gonna change to a solid axle. I recently purchased a Dana 44 solid axle from a 78 F250. The hubs are 8 lug instead of 5 and apparently it's a heavy duty axle. The problem is that I didn't realize that this was a leafspring axle. I bought the axle anyway since it was only $200 and I decided if there's a way...I'll make it fit!
My question is, does anyone have experience or know where I could find information on this particular swap with a leafspring axle? I would like to use coil springs(I know I'll have to fab and weld on perchs), but leafsprings aren't out of the question. I'm not interested in solid axle conversion kits....they seem like a huge waste of money. I can fabricate and/or machine any parts I need at work, but I'd rather hear from someone who's already done this swap and find out what they did!
if you want to stay with coil springs a good way of doing it is doing away with the radius arms and fabricating a 4-link setup which is quite easy to do and makes your caster easier to adjust just fab a panhard arm that goes from the cross member to the top of the differential if you're interested I can email you some rough sketches on how to do it email me at ctdoffroad@***.net
I am in the process of doing my truck but instead of coils i am useing air bags off of a peterbuilt for alot of adjustable lift and articulation then I am going to do the same for the rear axle
