Need Carb Help

I just inherited a '75 f250 from my brother and need to get it running. It currently has a 460 bored out to 472 and a holly 780 double pumper. This was a hot rod for my brother, but I have more practical uses in mind for the truck. The carb needs rebuilt, but I would like to replace it instead. I would like the truck to be a little easier on the gas I need it to haul/tow heavy loads, but not at 100mph. Any thoughts?

I know this isn't what you were wanting to do, but you asked for people's thoughts, and my thought is that it'd be cheaper just to rebuild what you've got. I could see replacing it if it just had a stock Motorcraft by Holley carb but since it's already got a double pumper I would probably just rebuild it.

I've gotta vacuum secondary, electric choke Holley 750 on my 460 and she's a bad ****...power when you need it and no headaches on tweaking. I've run Edelbrock and they're a pain when it comes to getting it set right.

Thanks for all the input guy's! Does anyone know what the tow/haul rating is on this truck with 4.11 open rear? How much do you think it would change going to 3.50 gears? mpg?

Thanks again!

Not sure what the tow rating is for your rig, but if you use taller gears and tow a loaded trailer you're definitely gonna see a higher gas expenditure in comparison with the 4.11s...tire size plays a part too.

If you are going to be towing heavy loads then keep the 4.11s. Put gas milage completly out of your mind. That truck is not going to improve it's milage much no mater what you do.

any thoughts about overdrive? I know it won't help when loaded, but what about when not?

Well, lets do the math. If you drive 10,000 miles a year @ 10mpg you will use 1000 gallons of gas. Let's just say that an overdrive will give you an additonal 2 mpg. If you drive 10,000 miles a year @12 mpg you will use 833 gallons of gas, 166 gallons less. At $2.50 per gallon you'll save $415.
Are you going to drive this truck 10,000 miles a year empty? As you said, loaded miles will not be effected.
If you drive the truck 5,000 miles a year empty you will save a little over $200.
If you spend $1000 installing an OD, It will take 5 years to break even at that rate.
Of course the price of gas will fluctuate, savings with OD may be more or less, this is just an example of how to pencil it out.

Is their not an AOD avaialbe for a big block? I won't mess with a computer. How much I drive the truck empty will depend alot on how much gas it eats.
