My first post. I've got a '86 BII 2.9 5 speed in real nice shape. I don't drive it that much but I've been having trouble keeping it running. It'll be running great and just shut down. I've replaced computer, both fuel pumps, every sensor, coil, etc. Almost everything is new and I still cant keep it running. When you turn the key on you can hear both fuel pumps cycle, it'll start, run for about 10 sec. and then just quit. The pumps still cycle when you switch the key, it just wont start. If you let it sit for awhile It'll do the same thing again. I've seen something about the enertia (sp?) switch and checked it, no problem there that I can tell. I'm about ready to sell it for scrap. HELP
Would add a simple thing like a TFI module overheating due to lack of grease to cool it could cause the problem you describe as well. If in doubt remove it, clean the back of it and the mounting surface real good and then use dialectic grease between it and the distributor.
Thanks, I'll check these. The last time this happened The fuel pressure was fine, 42 psi if I remember correct. The TFI module is new, but who knows, this thing has been worked on by so many people, I know whats been done, but another thing to know whats been done right. I by no means am a mechanic but I understand and can use all the help I can get. I'll try these and let you know. Thanks again.
I just got done fixing the exact same thing on my 84 BII. It has a 5.0 though. Mine would run for about 30 seconds and then it would just die. I bought a fuel pressure gauge from Harbor Freight and watched it as the engine was running. I had good pressure until the 30 seconds in. At that time, the pressure would just drop suddenly to 0 psi. The fuel pump was shutting down and would just stop pumping. I traced the problem to my relay because I knew the pump was good. A wire that was supposed to get hot when the key was on, wasnt. So I found one that was, spliced into it, and problem solved. It runs great now. I, too, thought it was something with ignition at first but everything checked out just fine, then I got a gauge and found it was one wire.

I know you said you changed all the sensors, but did you replace the TABV; also know as idle air control valve? Cheers
I replaced the TABV about a month ago when it started running high RPM all the time. I've also changed the throttle position sensor, vacuum control, fuel regulator. I haven't had time to check the fuel pressure again, TFI module, stator. You guys have given me lots of things to check. Thanks, I'll post when I get these things checked/fixed. Keep the suggestions coming though.
