I have a 2001 F250 Xcab Short Bed w/ 2 Piece Drive Shaft (U joint - Spline/Slip Joint - U joint). I was getting a vibration from 35 - 55 MPH and then again at 72+. I replaced the U-joints and it went away for a short time, took it to a local garage and they found that the rear U-joint was loose sitting inside the Yoke/Differential. Replaced the U-joint and retention caps with Ford Parts. The vibration was gone for a few days and now has started up again. When I get under the truck, there is a gap between the U-joint caps and the ears inside the Yoke on the differential probably about 0.050" total or 0.022" - .023" per side. Even with the clips tightened to the Yoke you can move it side to side manually. Should there be a gap between the Yoke tabs and the U-joint? If so, which side should I bias towards or should I center it? Should I replace the Yoke off the Rear Differential? Lastly, I was thinking about making a set of shims to keep the thing centered... what do you guys think.
