Power Steering Upgrade
73-77.5 were power assist, expensive to maintain, and needed maintenance often, my vote=avoid.
Thought you mentioned a 2wd with PS, and a 4wd with a manual box?
Regardless, the power assist is poor. I guess when it works well, it is alright, but it is borderline.
You do want to upgrade to power steering, and as suggested you can use the 78/9 box. This is not a direct bolt in, since the x-member is different from the HB trucks to the later 77.5-79 trucks.
I used a saginaw 16:1 4 turn power steering box for my 74 when I upgraded the steering and converted to crossover steering.
I just had a lengthy discussion regarding the advantages of either steering type, and would simply suggest that you consider all of your options.
You do not necessarily have to convert to x-over, but the power steering upgrade is definately worth the investment.
You do not want to try to scab that super funky 2wd box into your frame rails, this will require some real ghetto fabrication and the frame will have to be cut terribly. I have seen 2wd boxes used in these older trucks, and I heve never seen this accomplished with a positive outcome.
Here is a pic of my box during the install:
