just got word my 99 e-150 needs upper ball joints. i almost fell of my chair then i heard the price. what i don't get is i changed the tires last year, they had 30k but they where dry rotted. they had worn very evenly. my new tires have 4k on them and i see no hints of uneven wear. am i being taken for a ride. i switched to new mechcanic. any idea what the cost should be.
i will tell you the cost they gave me after.
I forgot to mention it's upper and lower ball joints plus a front end alignment. Is 35k a little premunture for this?

Reason: forgot to add something
I did mine just ,afew weeks a go but it was tires that gave it away i tride to get it alinde when i got new tires but they said id need a caster camber kit because 98 dont have the anyway changed them uper and lower and doing fine the upers are a compleat but the lowers you have to press in but all in all the coast was about 250$ and i did the work
how many miles did you have on your truck? mechicanic told me ford doesn't put grease fittings on the lowers from the factory thats why they are beat already. he said to replace uppers now, because it will just cost more to do them another time. for uppers and lowers with labor $725.

Sounds a bit pricey to me. I was planning on doing mine so I have been looking around. eBay sells a "kit" with all the parts, but it really must be low quality 'cause you get uppers, lowers, all tie rod ends and pitman/idler arms for under $200. I'm afraid to buy it. Better quality stuff is looking like it will run between 350-500 retail. I can't imagine it is that hard to do, looks like it just takes some time and patience, then take it in to be aligned. My truck has 136k on it, but if your tires rotted out, it may be the envirnment was harsh on your ball joints too.
