I have read several great threads on how to replace the spark plugs on a 5.4L and have found the information very helpful. I have two questions I still need help with. Before I ask the question I should explain that the codes are indicating I have a misfire in #6. I have a 2000 expy with 114,000 miles. My questions are:
1. Can I just replace one plug and not the others? I would prefer to limit my work on these plugs as the fewer things I twist the fewer things I can screw up. Additionally, with the economy the way it is I would prefer to save as much money as possible since this thing was running great before this sudden issue cropped up.
2. Does the COP need replaced when the plug is replaced?
3. My friend says that these 5.4L engines are very touchy and can easily strip the threads on the head. Is it as easily screwed up as my friend indicates?
1. Depends on how many miles are on the other plugs.
2. The COP could be the source of the skip and not the plug. The easiest way to confirm this is to swap the COP with another cylinder and see if the skip moves with the COP.

2. Does the COP need replaced when the plug is replaced? No, but it would be a good time to do it, while you have the plugs out.
3. My friend says that these 5.4L engines are very touchy and can easily strip the threads on the head. Is it as easily screwed up as my friend indicates? We have not encountered that yet, but others may have.
Our new Ford COP’s, the Sultans of Spark(S.O.S.), have
been designed with both durability and performance in mind.
What would it cost+/- at a ford dealer or a good mech. to change all 8 plugs, cop, and wire on a 2000 5.4 expy.
My truck has 116000 miles on it with original plugs and i can feel it coming soon.
It probably is your COP misfiring, I would change just the COP and the plug with misfire, then change out all the plugs when your ready. Which at 144,000 miles should be soon, if they have not yet been changed.
Thanks to everyone. This information has been very helpful. I'll let ya all know how it turns out when I get some time (hopefully next weekend). By the way, how much does a cop cost?

Ok, I changed the plug - man it was nasty looking, rusty.....at any rate I put the COP from number 6 which was misfiring on #5 when I put it back together so that I would know if its a COP problem. Well I'm still getting a code for misfire on #6, but the truck seems to run great.
Do I need to clear the codes and if so how do I do that?
Also, when I picked up the new plug they said it called for a gap of .054. I checked the plug I took out and although I realize it was nasty old and worn, it had a gap of .060. Is this a problem?

Just change the offending COP for now but buy and extra one to have for the next time. I change all 8 plugs on my 2000 5.4 and it is difficult to get to the back 2 but it is do-able. Just be sure the plugs go in easy and straight. Good luck, fitzy67 2000Exp 193,000 and still strong.
