I build bars and restaurants, and I ran out of iso alcohol to wipe the resin top and clean the tools... I did have a few cases of smirnoff which work well.... actualy cheaper per gallon than the iso from HDepot.
Mostly I use hand cleaner for the auto tools and the tool cases and some elbow grease.

......That's ALCOHOL ABUSE!!!.... I use a Brakeclean soaked rag on the real dirty stuff first, then if needed..or for general cleaning and wipedown a rag sprayed with Simple Green ,spray-nine etc..Glass cleaner on the tool-box fingerprints.
Put some hand cleaner on a paper towel and rub over the dirt and then wipe dry. The plastic grips on some of my tools would get a heavy buildup of dirt and oil so I would just take some time to wipe everything off. Fresh start till the gunk builds up again.
I too prefer to keep my tools clean for the next time of use. Generally its just a light coat of oil or such. So i can just wipe it off with a rag. Otherwise i will use Wd40 or paint thinner.
When I turned wrenches for a living, I used brake clean. Always had cans of the stuff laying around. Worked great on metal tools, never used it on my DVOM. It never seemed to bother the plastic handles on pry bars, screw drivers or the like. Spray it on a clean rag and wipe down tools, put tools in tool box.
Now that I have to pay for this stuff myself, I use Simple Green. It's cheaper and goes a long way. I think you can use the stuff on plastic as well.
I use those blue gloves when working on cars. Your skin absorbs way too many chemicals and it makes clean up faster.
When I helped my cousin put a metal roof on my aunts lean-to bedroom, we used blackjack and it , of course wound up all over my DeWalt cordless drill. Hopelessly wrecked I thought. Then I found some GooGone and applied it on straight. It made the drill look almost new. This stuff gets my vote for tool clean up where plastics are a concern. Also it's not nearly as hard on a body like brake cleaner.
