Emptying water separator

Hi all,
My empty water light came on for the first time today. I opened the lever and watched it flow. And watched, and watched, and watched. It flowed for about four minutes before I finally stopped it. My question is will it stop on it's own or will fuel continue to flow from the tank. Thank you in advance for your answers

Dan

There is no need to let it run that long, just open it up let it run for 30 seconds or so and call it good. If you see visible water you may want to run it a little longer but I have never seen any water in mine.

Dan - how long have you had the truck or how many miles on it?

you should drain the water separator monthly, most of the time you should just see fuel. Watch it as it goes into the can for color but usually about 30 seconds should be plenty enough to get the water out.

My truck is an 08 350 with a 6.4. It has 25k miles on it. It was a lease return.
So the general concensus is that the separator is obviousley tied directly to the lines and tank, and it will drain the lines and tank if it is left open?

Also after I drained it last night the light came back on this morning. Is there a need to reset that light or will it reset on it's own?
Thanks all

Dan

light resets itself. Might need to change the filters if you drain somemore off again and the light does not go out. How long have you had the truck and are you getting your fuel at the same place everytime? May need to change stations?

You have the light or message center? I think you have the light? Might just hit the reset button and see if it clears too.

fuel water separator is located inside the frame rail on the drivers side. When you crawl under the truck you will see it right away, just a quick turn of the lever and fuel/water will start to flow, be sure you have a can right there so it doesn't go on your face! Diesel owners manual supplement has a pic and directions for this as well.

I have the message center. I fill up at Sunoco pretty much every time I have gotten diesel. I'm not sure how the truck was treated before I owned it. Do you think the filter could need changed with only 25k miles? I'm still learning the whole wild world of diesel motors. This is my first one and I must say I'm hooked.

Per your diesel supplement if you have it:

Page 63 says to change the filters after 2 year/20, 000 miles or if you are operating under special conditions 400 hours/10,000 miles.

So sounds like it is time.

I'm slowly reading the manuals when I have time. Is that just the fuel filter or is it a special type of filter?

I change my fuel filters about every third oil change. Mine has 26,000 on it and I am changing it for a second time.

Book has a parts list in it, both filters are to be changed at the same time. There is not special filter just the recommended one in the book

There is normal operation and special operating conditions that dicate the interval.

It should reset on its own. My first thought on this is that you got some bad fuel. You mentioned that you always fuel up at the same station, that matters some. Even if you go to the best station in town you can still get watered down fuel if you time your fueling poorly. If you go right after the tank is filled all the crap in the bottom of the tank gets stirred up.
