I could remove the diaphragm from the dizzy because the screws snapped off. It ran fine but was rough at idle and slow acceleration. I put the new dizzy in and timed it. You couldn't get it to 20 mph! I rotated the dizzy slightly by turning it right. It improved. I kept doing this. Now it runs like a raped ape until about 50. If your going 50 and punch it, it bogs down. Can i harm anything by continuing to rotate to the right until it no longer bogs down? With the old dizzy it never bogged down if your going 30+ and punch it.
Forgot to mention its a '73 460 in a '68 F250. I have it at 15 BTC ( i think ). Now it runs ok. Pings at idle but accelerates quickly. Runs better then it ever did though. Still have old plugs in, and have some cheap gas in it.
i would say your a cog off, i know i did that once and it acted the same way, so i would say pull the distributer and the valve cover over the number one cylinder and make dang sure its at TDC then be very very sure that you put the dist. in on the number one spot. just my two cence
Will running it while it pings do any damage? It just pings at idle. I'll screw with timing in a day or 2 when i have some free time. It runs ok while driving, but i still lost some acceleration. I'll pull dizzy, move the gear one and put it back in. It was a pain to get in the first time and i think your correct in saying a cog is off. I just need to know if its safe to drive like this for a day or 2.
IMO i wouldn't drive it, that pinging hurts the engine, its only gonna take you an hour maybe to pull the valve cover and dist and get it all in order, so i would say work late on it so you dont hurt the engine.
