replacing transmission
2000 Eddie Bauer 4x4 with 5.4L engine has a bad transmission according to local mechanic. $750.00 for used transmission plus labor and fluid. How hard would it be to do it myself and how do i know what transmission I have?

I would get a second opinion. Unless you have an extemely reputable shop. A few years ago I had transmission problems and my mechanic sent me to a transmission shop that looks like hell compared to the competition, but the two brothers are as honest as can be and they knew right away that I had a broken modulator spring. They sure could have taken me to the cleaners but they didn't and I got out of it for $300.
