Has anyone had problems with their shift lever? I have seemed to develop a problem, when I start the x and depress the brake pedal to shift out of park, the shift lever will not move out of park. When the ignition is in run, I can shift into n and then start the motor, and then everything is good, until I again shift into P. I have trouble shooted and I think I have narrowed down to the actuator on the column.
How have I come to this conclusion. I have checked all the fused for the brake depressed switch, and for the actuator,(actually checked all because I could not find the exact fuse for the actuator), and all are fine. When started and brake depressed, I can here the switch work, so I know it is fine, but the actuator will not open. I have the column cover off, and can see the actuator, and see that it does not want to open, and all electrical connections seem fine.
Has anyone had to replace their actuator, and any helpfull suggestions at what else I could check would be great. The manual says that the whole column has to come out to get to the actuator, but I think I could get to it after removing the central fuse box.(I hope) Thanks.
Wallz you might want to check the brake light switch located behind the brake pedal. This controls the cruise control deactivation and the brake lock. When you start the you need to step on the brake and the lock releases allowing you to go into gear. Hope this help.
Good point desert 4x4. I had forgot that that switch also controls the cruise deactivation. That would be one easy way to verify of it working. I'll have to set the cruise and see if it deactivates, to basically rule out that switch. Thanks
Wallz another easy way to check if your brake light switch is working is to check to see if your brake lights are coming on. Good luck...
To do this by yourself in " real time", park it near a garage door where you can see the brake lights against the surface.... I once troubleshot a intermittent brake light on a Taurus SHO driving at night....was on the brakes hard, cruise not releasing, but no brake light visible in the back window, pumped the brakes once and it worked.
I would also check to make sure that your lock/tumbler is fully returing to the run position after you start it, sometime the return spring will get weak, and if it is not in its accurate spot you will not be able to move your shift lever. Your lock/tumbler is the first thing in line to allow you to move your shift lever. Being that you can shift it before you start it would lead me to believe this is your problem. All you have to do is start it, and then slightly rotate the key back towards you as if to turn it off, but not so far taht you do, then try shifting it.
Check out lights and stuff first and all worked fine. Thanks for suggestions.
Well, went for a drive today to try out if cruise control works. Well guess what I find out. No cruise control. Even after checking all the fuses yesterday, I decided to check the cruise control fuse. #34, and #27. Found 34 burnt out.(was actually very hard to see, until you lifted to the light that it was out.hmmm) Tried out cruise, and still not coming on. Checked out the fuse and burnt out again. When I got home, I checked out all the electrical connections in the column, and replace the fuse one more time, started it up, and now the lever works fine. Just like nothing ever happened.
I'll have to wait till tomorrow to check out the cruise, and then go from there, and if I blow the fuse again, I get to trace every wire with a tester to try and find a frayed one. Oh what joy.(I just hope it doesn't come to that.)
