i do not have a fuel pressure gauge. i was wondering what the fuel pressure is on a 1971 f250 ranger camper special?

thanks, that's what i was afraid of. i got a new carb and it seems to be flooding and i was thinking it was getting too much gas after stepping on the gas pedal fast.
once again thanks

carb is a edelbrock 1406. says max pressure to be about 6 psi. tuned the carb. stock jets. timing is dead on. pump is stock. i would guess it is fuel pressure or as you said before choke.
when i step slow on the gas it seems fine, problems is when i accelerate normal it begins to sputter a bit and if i step hard it almost stalls out, backfires from the carb(sometimes big sparks and a few times flames) then seems to run just fine until i stop or slow down then it starts again. i do have some blowby from the valve cover( valve job is next).
maybe it's something i haven't thought of. idle is just fine. there is a strong smell of gas under the hood.

You might want to take another look at the timing. I recently had a timing problem with the 390 in my 67. The marks looked fine under a timing light but it had similar problems. Mainly backfire. Turned out the rubber in the balancer was deteriorated and allowed the outer ring to move. I swapped balancers, reset the timing and it runs fine.

OOOPS! I THINK I JUST FOUND MY PROBLEM. according to the VIN search i have a 390 not a 360. my valve cover has a 360/390 family and says it's a 360 cid but the engine looks to be original. now i gotta figure out the timing for a 390

According to the specs I have the timing setting for both 360 and 390 in 71 is the same. The spec I have is 6 degrees BTDC for both engines. It's possible that the engine has been swapped at some time in the past.

Something you might want to try is to advance the timing is 2 degree increments. FE series engines respond well to timing advance. If you don't notice an improvement by 12 - 14 degrees BTDC this isn't the problem.

Some VIN decoders listed in repro parts suppliers catalogs, and some online websites are not correct.

The 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code.

1968/76 F100/350: H = 390 2V / M = 390 4V (1974/76 only) / Y = 360 2V.

If your valve cover has an emissions sticker that makes reference to the "360/390 family" the covers are from a 1973/76, which could mean that the engine has been swapped.

If the engine in your truck has been swapped, and was swapped from a truck sold new in CA, the timing settings are not the same as the other 49 states.

1. Why did you replace the carb? was it running bad or was it doing the same type of things ? If your fuel PSI is to high it will be flooding at idle. An old lesson learned Just because it's new don't mean it's good. Sometimes it takes many, many yrs to learn this golden rule. Double check wires like ,loose wires in the dissy, plug wires remember #1 is on the leftside looking at the motor. If you don't have a manual yet it's time to get one..This site can only help you read between the lines of your manual. But not to be the manual. Burned exh seats will make it pop back out the carb too.. my 2cents orich
