Fly wheel advice - 408 stroker
I am in the process of swapping in my newly built 408 stroker and was wondering if I can reuse the flywheel out of the 351 Windsor I am replacing.
The casting # is C6ZE 6380-A 157 teeth 13" dia - the teeth seem fine and the starter engages well with no noise or flat spots.
My understanding was that ALL 351's were 28 oz imbalance - true?
The new engine is also balanced to 28oz externally.
The shop that I got to hoist it in thinks I am running a big risk by reusing the flywheel and should be investing in a forged centerforce which goes for about $450 locally. I don't think I will be making more than 475 lb ft or torque.
I went ahead and used the old one, should I be worried and/or pulling it out again?
Billet aluminum sure does look purdy, but that counts for nothing when it's hidden in the housing.
Thanks!
Just driving around on the street is quite a different situation from doing all out drag racing!
For a street driven vehicle there is nothing wrong with the flywheel you have as long as it has a good surface and is in good shape. If you plan on doing some high RPM drag racing OTOH, then you could definitely use a good aftermarket flywheel, and even a scattershield for that matter.
BTW, I am just now starting my research on Ford strokers, but I'm pretty sure that the 28 oz. imbalance applies to the harmonic balancer, not the flywheel.
Good luck and enjoy the new found power.
Not drag, race or street. Not even a car ot truck. This stroker is being installed in my 20' welded aluminum jet boat. Not a racer - a stable whitewater and fishing platform. However it is continually under load pushing the hull against the resistance of the water.
I have built for low and mid range torque. The engine will run between 3000 and 3500 rpm 90% of the time with the odd exhilarating run up to 6000 where I will limit it. The short block is all forged with a 28oz dampener and the build sheet calls for a 28oz flywheel imbalance as well.
Thanks for the reply!
In a few months I expect that I will be able to answer the question, but I'm not to that stage of my build yet.
Sounds like a great project. Enjoy.
