Steering Wheel doesnt wheel.............
When you turn the steering wheel on this 97 Explorer it doesnt come back itself.
Its hard to explain but when you turn a steering wheel while you are moving and let it go it tends to try and center itself. (know what I mean?)
Well anyway when you turn the wheel on this thing it stays turned and you have to turn it back which causes a jerk. Its like its got a hard spot.
Power steering pump has oil and makes no strange noises?

From what you've said it sounds like you have a bad ball joint, froze up. Maybe more then one, that is the stiffness or hard spot you feel and its keeping it from returning to center after a turn.
If one is bad enough it could/would also throw off the alignment but excessive play in a ball joint doesn't usually make it hard to move, just "sloppy" in handling department.
You could also have a bad tie rod end or two in with the mix, stiff partially froze ball joints are hard on tie rod ends.
