While I was at work yesterday, I moved one of the trucks that a guy stuck in a fresh rebuild from jasper which included the injection pump and injectors already installed from the factory.
Well, Started that thing and I dont' think I have ever been in a truck that has ever vibrated that much. I could feel it the seat, steeringwheel, the doors, floor and metal dash were making so much noise you can't think.. Not only that, the engine itself is the loudest I had ever herd. Not to mention its in a large completly metal box truck that has 500K+ thats beat to hell.. I know these are loud engines but yall sould hear this baby!!! It feels like someone welded a very large weight on one side of the flywheel or something cause you can sit there and listen to your teeth rattle. I have heard many of these engines, but nothing like this.
Make sure the trans components are fastened up good. I have seen torque converters fastened up wrong and bust a flex plate instantly. Thats is the only thing that could cause a problem where the installer messed up.
I did see a 6.5 replaced one time and the new motor did the same thing and it ended up being a cat. converter stopped up. That was a bad call. Wasn't me though. I did make a bad call on Detroit one time. It happens.
wow id like to see that haha.maybe its just built really bad *** but doubtful.have fun with that one i would say its a timing issue to make it do that or like catfish said
I had a reman that did that.
9700 miles later the crankshaft was a two piece version.
As far as we can tell, the crank was cracked, they used it anyway or did not catch it.
The engine was extremely loud, almost hurt your ears with a high pitched rattle when it was first started.
The vibration was not to bad at first, but it got worse as I drove it.
Right before it broke, 2000 RPM was out of the question the vibration was so bad.
Two more things come to mind a friend of mine bought a nice 87 idi because it felt like the motor was going to shake out of the truck. Installed a new fan clutch and drove it home.
Another thing and I dont know how the 6.9s are set up but somebody on here will know is the bellhousing adapter may be off a little doesn't take much we use dial indicators to install them on cummins. could it have been missing a dowell pin.
One injector loose in the head will cause a "misfire" that is good to shake the whole truck, I went through that in September, as luck (or the lack thereof) has it it happened 100 miles from home with a car to tow too. Didn't quite catch it then tho, I thought about it for a minute but then I forgot about it cause the darn race was going steady downhill, ended up driving it home like that through some nasty rainstorm and still got 15mpg, then later that week I remembered about the loose injector thought and checked them and sure enough #5 was loose - pulled it, replaced o-ring, tightened it down, no more compression leaks, engine runs nice smooth (well, as smooth as one of these can run). This actually happened to me 3 times, on injectors #4, 5, and 6, in that order, #6 tho I could not remove cause it felt like I'm fighting threadlock, so I just tightened it down and she was good.
Well, I don't think its the bell housing since it just uses like 12 or so bolts (never counted) for the spicer manual tranny. Otherwise, That would be a great one to check. It feels more like the crank is bent/broke or something but its still running. I know it shook real bad before they installed the tranny when they put the new engine in and test fired it.
Also, The injector is something to consider but I don't think it would make it shake as bad as this, and loud rattleing, hammering, I honestly don't know how that thing is still running. If you have ever driven a full aluminum metal box truck, yall know how loud they are, this thing is like a paint shaker with tin cans tied to it.
HEY DAVE S, Was your engine rebuild a Jasper that broke. We have had bad luck with the jasper rebuilds. I hear they are a great company but Im thinking not so great with the 7.3, 6.9 IDI.
If the timing marks are lined up on the IP, then it's too advanced by 1-2 teeth alignment with the cam gear. (if louder than a powerstroke significantly, 2 teeth.) It will also shake progressively worse as timing is retarded 2 degrees or more, but thats easily diagnosed by hard/slow starting, pugnent diesel exaust smell, blue exaust smoke, and breakup above 1500~2000 RPM's.
On the bright side you wont have to put up with it long. I hope jasper is aware of the problem and it is documented with them. My luck it would last 1 day longer than the warranty.

I don't know about IDIs but he's right about Cummins, guys get real picky about the alighnment on them.
Also if the motor is "ground-out" where the motor or trans. is touching some part of the body or chassis where it's not supposed to it'll shake your teeth out. I saw a wrecked Dodge-Cummins that way and you couldn't read the gauges or look in the mirrors.
The body shop supposedly fixed it. The owner brought it by for me to look at it and I couldn't believe they let it out like that. They said they thought it was "normal" for diesels to shake like that.
IDIOTS!!!!!
My dad had an old UD truck, he had two of them. The first one he bought lasted 400,000 and was still running when it left here, he liked it so much he bought another one a little newer, by the time he got home it was vibrating bad enough to shake your teeth out, took it somewhere where they pulled the oil pan and the crankshaft was in two pieces, but some kind of way it was still running, or at least thats what they said, had to have a used engine put in.
