My MPG has been getting poorer and poorer lately. I reset my MPG calculator at each fill up so I see what I am getting per tank. Lately I have noticted after filling up that my MPG goes down pretty considerably when I am waiting at stop lights, and then improves a bit when I start moving.
I don't get any codes that there is a bad COP or any misfire. I have a fuel filter that is about 15,000 miles old and I just replaced the air filter. It was DIRTY. I just turned 87,000 miles.
Your meter is telling you the truth. Think about it. You can maybe get 14MPG. Now if you cruise there, it's counting that your engine turning is making motion. Now when you're sitting at a stop light you're still burning fuel to idle, but making no motion from it. So your miles out of that gallon decreases.
Another way to look at it. I put in one gallon of gas, and I should travel 20 miles on that gallon. But what if I stop and have a 30 minute lunch while the truck idles? Will I still have 20 miles worth of gas in the tank? no.
