i have an 86 f250 diesel and my back tank has a hole in it. the guy who had it before me said he unhooked the thing that switches between tanks and he said that the fuel gauge doesnt work because of that. i checked the valve and it didnt look like anything was unhooked. is that valve where the tanks switch? and y doesnt my fuel gauge work? i want to hook it all up and jus run off my front tank like im doing now but i still dont have a fuel gauge. can anyone help
If the diesel works like a dual tank 460, then yes the valve switches the fuel guage.
Scope the wires out going to the valve. If you have a yellow/white wire, that's the one coming from the front that goes to the fuel gauge.
If you have a yellow/lightblue, that is the wire going to the rear sending unit.
If you have a darkblue/yellow, that is the wire going to the front tank sending unit.
If you cut the yellow/white and the darkblue/yellow, and tie them together, then that will hook the gauge straight to the front sending unit.
If it still doesn't work, take the splice you made, and with the key in run, short the yellow/white wire to ground. Then take it off ground. Each time you do this, the fuel guage should swing back and forth. If it passes this test, then the wiring and the gauge are good, and the sending unit is bad in the front tank.
