I've got a 98 Sport, 4x4. Over the past few months, I've been having an issue with my driver's side headlight bulbs. It keeps going dim, doesn't ever completely blow out, just dims. It stays dim on high and low beams. I have replaced the bulb about 5 times now in the past few months and used 3 different brands thinking that it was a quality issue at first, and now it's obvious that it's not. Most recently, I replaced one the weekend of October 25th, and it dimmed on me this monday. Any ideas? It's got me stumped, because as soon as I put a new bulb in, all is well.
Just replacing the bulb would seem to be a connection issue. Have you tried replacing the pigtail connector at the bulb? If you have the model with the lamp out module it may be failing too, although it usually will cause the lamp to go out completely and usually on the driver side. If it has a message center on the console, remove that and locate the lamp out module on the passenger inside of the console. With the headlamp dim tap on the module and see if it gets bright again. If you dont have the lamp out module check for poor ground issues.
I didn't have a chance this weekend to check through the wiring to see what the deal is, but yeah, I'm thinking ground issue, and was just wondering what would be a potential issue, had anyone seen a particular area that would cause an issue. I don't think it's a module issue bc as soon as I put a brand new bulb in, it's fine, and then will dim out again, so I'm thinking it's overheating the bulb and causing a leak of some sort in the bulb, and not letting it get to it's full brightness. The reason i think this is that the base of the bulb was brown instead of clear when I pulled it out. I'm going to look further and see what happens, i'm tired of buying bulbs, lol.
It isnt getting moisture in the housing is it? You are making sure you arent touching the bulb when putting it in? Moisture can kill the halogen bulbs pretty fast.
