Head Light Switch Removal

2000 F150 Larait 5.4 7700 2WD
Thought I would fix the black out problem while I had some spare time. I need help to remove the head light switch. I have read the post and my switch does not have the little slot to release it. Build date is 11-1999. Also do not have fog lights if that makes a difference, but it does have the auto head light feature. I tried to pull out on the switch but it does not want come off. I am afraid I might break something if keep going. There has got to be an eaiser way.

After trying everything possible I managed to get the **** off. There is a slot that you can put a very small screwdriver into it and the plastic piece will release the ****. Tried to reinstall the **** 180 degrees off and it did not seem to go on that way. Pushed in tried to turn clockwise but nothing happened. There is a small slot in the black plastic switch housing at the bottom center. Stuck a small screwdriver in there but could not find anything that felt like some kind of release. Does this slot have something to do with the removal of the switch housing? The write up seemed so easy to follow if I could get the switch housing out.

If I'm not mistaken, there are clips top and bottom that hold the later model switches in place. Use a thin tool to release these clips. Good luck!

Is their a special way to release these clips. I just can't seem to figure this out. When I inserted the small screwdrive in the slot, I did not feel any way to release the clip. I feel that their is something that I am doing wrong. I would really like to get this odometer black out problem fixed.

The only thing that my CD version service manual says is this:

CAUTION: Do not use a screwdriver to remove the headlamp switch or damage to the finish panel may occur. Adding tape to the end of a thin tool will reduce marring to the finish panel.

Insert a thin tool to remove the headlamp switch.

I wonder if it would take something like a feel guage? Good luck!

Thanks for the reply KingRanchMan. I will try again tomorrow to remove it using a feeler gauge. You are right about the screwdriver, it will chip the paint. Now I have another project to repair.
