Where can I look for help on replacing a timming on my 1983-351 ford truck? I have already purchased the chain and gears but I sure do need information on the replacement steps. I only use the truck to plow snow it deffinately is our ole rust bucket. At this time we cant afford to have it towed in and done in a shop. PLEASE HELP!!!
Thanks
Get yourself a Haynes or Chiltons manual. They are generally available at any chain parts store like Autozone, Advance, or O'Riellys. If you don't want to buy one, they're also frequently available at your local library. You can also check the chain store web sites for repair info.
Thanks Bill for the reply about the timming chain. We do have a Chiltons manual but it only shows how to check to see if the timming chain is bad. I need the step by step for the installation of a new one. Do you have any suggestions. I will call Autozone and Advance those are the only ones in our area to see if they have a different manual
Have a great day

Which Chiltons book do you have? If it's the Ford Truck specific book, read it closely...it'll be in there....you may need to approach it in steps, such as water pump removal, then timing chain cover, etc. Also different places in the book, like the engine rebuilding chapter.
If you don't want to have to read through books and web sites then here goes.
Drain the radiator, pull the hoses off from it, pull the radiator out, remove the hoses from the water pump, remove the belts, remove the fan and pulley, remove the water pump, clean most of the gunk off of the front of the engine, remove the harmonic balancer then the timing chain cover, (you will have to loosen the front bolts on the oil pan) "before you pull the chain and gears off get the timing marks lined up so that they are together, the top gear mark to the bottom gear mark", then pull the chain and gears off. Reassemble in the reverse order making sure you replace the timing cover seal and gaskets and water pump gaskets. If the front of the oil pan leaks oil you will have to replace the gasket on it along with the front seal, just don't over tighten the oil pan bolts, they are quarter 20s and twist off easilly.
May the force be with you.
