Key cylinder replacement?

Hello all; I dont post here much, I generally hang out in other areas of the site. In this case I need some help. How do I remove the ignition key cylinder. Mine has gotten crunchy and now locked up. I tried a little graphite at the first sign of resistance but that didn't help. I am thinking something has come apart internally.

I know it pops out fairly easily, I just need some instruction on how to do it.

Thanks.

turn to run, not start, insert 1/8" drill bit in hole below cyl.

i suggest removing neg cable first.

put new cyl in without moving anything.

easy.

if you only want one key then go to locksmith and they can match the door key for you to new lockset.

Press upward on 1/8th" sized probe in hole located under the key cylinder. Turn key to on position and you will feel the probe move deeper into the hole. Now pull outward on key cylinder. Silver button in center bottom of picture is what you have to push up on to get cylinder to release. Tape in pic is to stop door chime.

This info is great. I love the pictures!

How do I accomplish this if I cannot turn the key to run?

you have to drill out the cyl.

are you sure with jiggling etc. you can't get it to turn to run once more?

i looked this up for you.

from an old post i made:

ignore the first part if you have no key.

will the ignition turn with key in it?

if it does turn key to run, with battery disconnected, and insert 1/8" drill into hole on under side of steering column, pull out lockset, do not move anything, install new lockset.

if it does not move than do this. from ford manual:

-disconnect battery ground cable.

-remove steering wheel.

-using channel lock pliers or vise grips, twist lock cylinder cap until it seperates from the lock cylinder.

-using a 3/8" diameter drill, drill down middle of ignition key slot approx. 44mm (1-3/4") until lock cylinder breaks loose from breakaway base of lock cylinder. remove lock cyl. and drill shavings from the lock cylinder housing.

DO NOT DRILL TO DEEP!

-remove retainer, washer, ignition switch and actuator. thoroughly clean drill shavings and all other foreign materials from casting.

-carefully inspect lock cyl. housing for damage from the above operation. if damage is apparent, housing must be replaced.

install your lock cylinder.

good luck!

Life is good, I got it to turn over one more time. It was a real fight to get it done. At one point it involved a large pair of vice grips......

Thanks for everyones help.

Good info! The lock cylinder on mine has seperated from the chrome collar so I'll do this repair this weekend.
