i know on mine, there is a small button on the headlight switch to hold down and pull the **** and rod out. You can either get to it from under the dash or by un bolting the cluster trim and wedging your hand between the dash and the trim piece. Once you get it you will hit yourself in the face because of how easy it is once you figure it out.
Push the little button on top of your headslight switch and it will come right out.
Its a pain the first time, but if you reach up under the dash and find the headlight switch, then feel around to the top of it and you will feel the little button.
Push it , and pull your switch!
Just pull your lights on then tug a little harder than it should come off. Just push the post back in to shut them off.
Yours is broke. That is not the correct way to do it.
1st thing you have to do is pull the **** out to turn the headlights on then reach up under the dash and find the button on the headlight switch. The button should be on the top side of the headlight switch. Push that button in and then pull the **** and shaft out as one. If you are real good you can turn the headlights off without locking the shaft back in place. Disconnect the POS cable at the battery if you want to be safe.

Always disconnect the negative battery cable first. Never disconnect the positive first. The reason is very simple. If you remove the positive cable with the negative cable still connected, the sheetmetal near the positive post is still grounded. Because of this, you run the risk of sparking if you short your wrench to the sheetmetal while freeing the positive cable. Instead, if you remove the negative cable first, you won't cause a spark if your wrench smacks the sheetmetal because it's just ground to ground. Sparks around batteries are bad news.

I thought he just wanted the **** itself off not the shaft. I must have been doing it wrong this whole time then, BTW I love your trucks.-Rich
