Great post ckal. Here is what I did yesterday - after an incident where it stalled, I pulled the gasline off AFTER the filter and let if flow into a glass jar. It filled a quart in probably less than a minute and, like I said, this was with gas going through the filter and the tank was pretty low. There is no way the mower could burn fuel as fast as it was flowing.

The tank is semi-transparent so I can see in it clearly and it is clean. I can actually see the opening in the bottom of the tank and it is unobstruted. There is no fuel shutoff valve either. Only thing left is the potential obstruction in the gas line that somehow behaves intermittently. If that is the case it will be corrected once I change the lines.

Supposed to be a couple nice days this weekend so I think I have one more chance to get it working right.

I'm not worried about the snow machine at all. I've had it 15 years and it has never not wanted to start after two or three pulls. I did notice the auger housing is starting to rust away though. Maybe time to hit Lowe's while they are having a 10% off sale for Military members...

To be continued.....

Clean the rust up on your blower, and paint over it. The snow blowers at lowes really do not compare at all to older units. Cheap cheap cheap.

That's actually my plan although I do like the new John Deere machines. They look and feel like they are pretty heavy duty. Don't like the price though.

The funny thing is, when I bought my MTD machine, my father said the same thing...that the one I bought (at the now defunct HQ) was nowhere near as good as his 1964 model Ariens.

My self I have had great luck with Cubcadets...

Do not Ray what ever you do..Do not buy a Deere or any other mower or what ever from Home Dept or Lowes..Spend the extra and go to the dealer

John Deere's X300 and up are good. The L series like those found at Home Depot and Lowes is the cheap stay away from version.

Yup, pretty much every tractor at lowes/home depot is made by MTD. Sadly even the new Wheel Horses are made by MTD.

So even John Deere makes a Lowe's/Home Depot dminished quality machine? I knew some manufacturers do that but never expected it of Deere. Don't worry though, I would do lots of research before I spend my not-so-hard-earned money on a $1500 machine, regardless of where I purchase it. My next one will probably be an Arien's from the Mom and Pop True Value/Small Equipment dealer half a mile from my house.

By the way, my snow blower is an MTD and it has been great. Paid $649 for it in early '94 and other than a master link in the drive belt chain, a friction wheel and belts last year and a couple shear pins, the machine has been a work horse.

In-laws are coming over this afternoon which means I will be spending a couple hours in the garage - maybe I'll replumb the lawnmower gas line or fire up the blower. If I wasn't working tonight I'd be firing up a 12-pack.

When dealing with any of the "big box" stores, they get low prices not just by buying in volume, but also by having merchandise made specifically for them. And you can bet that the "specifics" are things that lowers the price, not raise the quality.

Back when my wife had a minivan, she was out of state and hit a curb and sliced up a Michelin tire that we had purchased at Sam's. She stopped at a local tire dealer to get a replacement and the guy looked at it and immediately said I don't have that exact tire, that's a Sam's Club Tire. I had done some research on the tires before buying them, decided that those were the ones I wanted and that Sam's had the best price. I couldn't tell any difference between the Sams and the local tire dealers, they all had the same name and tread pattern. But there was something different that someone in the business picked up on immediately.

1st Lesson learned - stores like Sam's/WalMart have enough buying clout to get even a company like Michelin to spin them off something special...

2nd Lesson - don't get your 12 pack from Home Depot...

That's sad. Hopefully the Motorcraft oil I buy at Wally is the same spec as that from the dealer.

Snowblower fired on the first pull. Stayed running on the second. Maybe I'll tackle the rust issue today.

Sharpen the auger on the snowblower Ray - maybe you can mow the lawn with that!

Maybe I should sharpen my spelling skills too. At least I had to time to edit it in the original post.

I think the rust on the auger housing is one of today's projects. Closed up in the garage with a can of primer and some spraypaint sounds like a plan. I'm thinking of using flourescent orange surveyors paint - I've got several cases of that stuff. Wonder how it would look....

My attention span isn't what it used to be. I'll probably wait until spring to worry about the lawnmower. If we have another nice day maybe I'll pull it out and change the gas lines but I doubt it.
