well i just found out that my steering box is leaking. The oil comes from the shaft that the pitman arm goes on. It just drips down the side of it all the time i can see it coming out little by little. What can i do to fix this?? maybe a sealer to see if it can seal the bad seal?? reaplace the seal?? replace steering box?? if anyone has any information it would be much appreciated thanks
Do yourself a favor.......don't use any type of "sealer" fluid. It may work temporarily, but leak worse than it did before.
Its not a hard job to reseal the gearbox to begin with. The hardest thing is removal and install. They have special tools(seal installers & removers) for this type of job, but I can tell you from experience it can be done quite easily using around the house(screwdrivers, deep sockets & hammers) type tools.
Start by wiggling the steering output shaft. If it's loose, then a new seal will leak in short order. I have never had one that the seal on the output shaft leaked on that wasn't caused by an internal failure on the shaft.
It is not hard to repair but you have to have some special tools. If you have never done one then don't try it,also that shaft is leaking for a reason and 9out of 10 are worn at seal ride.best bet is a rebuit one or new.Is your life on the line
The seal leak will not affect the way it works till you forget to fill it then is pump and box.Check local auto parts houses may only have new also look on line. I have built many 708's and710's and that is what Ford uses, but you better have the tooling.

And if it's a diesel, you will loose the brake power booster assist.
Like someone else said, see if the shaft is loose - if it is, chances are the box is just totally worn out and you'll be replacing bearings and shaft, and whatever all else.
