I bought a 1998 Ranger extended cab in 1999. Vehcile had about 13000 miles. After driving the vehicle for about 2 months, I noticed the power steering pump making a whining noise and discovered the resevoir to be nearly empty. Local Ford dealer inspected and found that I needed a new rack. Vehicle had about 15000 miles. Now one year later the same problem has occurred. Vehicle now has about 24000 miles. Thankfully my warranty is still in effect. No recall or bulletins. Anyone else experienced this problem. I'm concerned about how Ford will handle this after my warranty is up and also if the dealer is really correcting the problem or just fixing the symptom.
Ford parts installed by the dealer usually have
a 12mo 12000 warranty on them, that's how
I got my belt and tensioner replaced 3!! times
now,I know how you feel. It would squeal like
a pig every 5 to 6000 miles... finally I think I
solved the real problem better than they could,
the a/c comp. was slowly falling off,and finally
started vibrating when I would accelerate. My
guess is that this caused the belt to be misaligned but not at idle, prematurely wearing
the belt down. This was no doubt caused by
the no acount tech, the one who left the power
steering pump hanging off the engine and it,s
cap sitting on the the rad. cover,,double check
the work they do!!!

The service manager told me that even if my warranty expires, my service record would show a pattern problem with the steering and that Ford would likely continue to replace the part out of warranty. I wonder if that policy has ever been tested? You do make a good point about the 12 month / 12000 mile warranty for the service part. I need to check with them regarding that too. Otherwise I'm pretty happy with the truck.
Stick your head under it when you get it back,
make sure everything looks right,,,good luck
with future replacements if they are needed.....
I have received three bad alternators in a row before I got a good one,,not on my 150,
though,,, an old 72 cutlass I used to own........
