Holley 4180 Carb. Problem

I have a 1987 F-350 Flatbed 460 automatic trans. I had a problem with a stripped gas filter on the front bowl assmebly which was epoxied to the bowl. I started having problems with the truck stalling when stopped at red lights, so figured the fliter was clogging and decided to change it, In order to do this I need to replace the bowl, Got the same carb (Holley 4180) at the local junk yard for $50.00 complete took the front bowl off the junk yard one and replace the stripped one. Truck starts but when excellrating it bogs and it also bogs at high end speeds. Anyone have a clue. I could have gotten dirt or part of gasket inside or gasket cover excellerating diaphram hole. Will be taking a look today.

Thanks for any assistance.
Rich

Is the float level set right?

Pull the plugs and look at em is it lean or rich? (google "how to read a spark plug" if your not sure how to tell by looking at em)

Fuel level should be dead even with the bottom of the plug in the side of bowl, small brass plug. (But you probably already know that......)

Power valve could also be bad.

Know how to read spark plugs wet to rich dry to lean. This is a fuel problem. Maybe even the ongoing problem with the fuel pumps in the tank giving out. Guess I'll have to get someone to check fuel pressure....

Check fuel level while carb is on engine. The only problem the engine now is not level. Well have to find and area where it is. Regarding those site plugs, should the fuel just barely start coming out or just below the bottom of the opening?

Check fuel level while carb is on engine.

Asking? if so yea on motor, adjust with engine idling. Park so the truck sits level, set to dead nut even with the bottom of the hole, none leaking out.

This was a factory carb truck right, mechanical pump on motor? Should have 3 to 4 PSI at an idle.

If it was converted to carb over from EFI system then the EFI system pumps would have to much pressure for a carb.

Yes this is a factory supplied carb. No it's a flatbed with 2 tanks. No mechanical pump. Pump in tanks and one on frame, all electrical.

Ford dealer told me long time ago back when I had one of the first problems with my 87 that it had a pump in the tank, one in each of the tanks and one on the frame.
Told em uh no, no pump on the frame? and hear nothing in the tanks? Told me to drop the tanks then and replace the pumps, that's your problem right there. Dropped a tank and found no pump, took a good look and found one pump mounted up on the front of the motor like any other car/truck with a carb.

I'm not saying because its a factory carb that it doesn't have/can't have electric pumps because mine doesn't, just are you sure it does?

Well Ive checked and followed the lines from the engine to the split and electric pump on the frame right under drivers door. And no Mech. pump, just electric.

I reset the float on the front bowl and it seems to run much better. I have a new problem though one of my freeze plugs is now leaking. So will be working on that next. ITS ALWAYS SOMETHING!!!
