My gf drives an '05 Explorer with a 4.0. She got the truck about 4 months ago or so. Ever since we've had it, the trans seems to shift really weird. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, it just shifts weird, like it's meant to. Every up shift at normal driving speeds takes about 2 seconds. When it up shifts if feels like someone is manually shifting through gears. It's goofy. Why the heck does it shift liek that? Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?
I think your "2 second up shifts" is exaggerated or at least hope so but even if the delay is enough to make you state it like that it sounds to me like a weak pump, has anyone ever replaced the fluid and filter on it?
If never done or hasn't been done in a long time doing so now may improve its shifts. As well as make it last longer, soft shifts are hard on a auto, allows it to slip a little each shift and causes excessive heat.
How does the fluid look/smell, dirty brown? burnt?
The truck only has around 30k miles on it. I really hope there is nothing wrong with the trans. And it shouldn't already need the fluid flushed. I'll check the fluid, that's a good idea. I assumed there was nothing wrong with it because it has low mileage, and it has always done that, but I'll look into it. I suppose if the fluid smells normal, and is normal colored, there is no problem.
I hear what you're saying, it has always shifted that way. But they make the fluid holes small so the shifts are very soft as to not be felt by the driver and passengers. That coupled with a weak or dieing pump may be what you have going on. Maybe it was a little weak from the get go?
Depending on what tranny it has it may have a external pressure tap on it, if so it would be very easy to have the pressure checked. Then if the pump is found to be weak and the tranny is otherwise fine it may be worth having the pump replaced now at a minimal cost. Rather then wait until the tranny is toast.
If the pressure is fine you might want to consider a shift kit, would stiffen up the shifts and should help to make it last longer. One thing done with the kit is redrill select holes so the fluid moves through faster, shifts solid "now" that way.
I don't think a shift kind would be necessary. I just want to ensure that the transmission is functioning properly and is healthy. I'll check the fluid, then check the pressure. If it seems ok, then I'm fine with the shifting. Maybe I will look into a shift kit just for the hell of it, and maybe I'll decide to go with one of those. Thanks for all your advice!! It's very helpful and knowledgeable.
