I have posted this in the V10 section before, no one there had heard of this I suppose.
When the weather turns cool/cold, about 45-50 degrees and below, my truck has a howl that seems to come from the intake. It happens when sitting at idle, or rolling slow like in reverse. It goes away when the RPMs are increased. It has happened every fall and winter the past 3. It drives me nuts and can be heard outside the truck pretty well.
I have changed the air filter, tightened all the intake fittings etc. Nothing helps. Any ideas? What sets it off is the air temp apparently, even though I would think the engine bay would be warm enough to stop it, so I have to wonder if it's the heavier, more dense air? Any ideas would be appreciated.
What kind of filtration are you using? It could be something along the lines of Bernoulli's Principle and the energy is causing the tube and filter to resonate. Try laying a towel on the intake, it may change the frequency or just dampen the sound.
I have the same thing, loud hum and idle. replaced the IAC to no avail. If i cover the hold on the filter housing the hum goes away. did you ever resolve?
