More Power when engine cooler??

I noticed that my truck always seems very powerful when I first start driving it in the morning when its cold, but i notice after it warms up, it doesnt seem to have that extra insane power that it did when i first drive it. What causes this? And is there a way to cool the coolant or change the thermostat to make the motor perform the way it does when its cooler?

Is your air intake pulling in cold air or is it getting air from around the engine?

It will make a big diffence on a motor like the 460. Feed it cold outside air so her lungs can breathe. I don't recommend going with a colder stat, you want the motor to get up to temp but breathing cold outside air.

Thank you for replies. I dont know how I should go about getting this thing cooler air. Why wouldnt k&N provide a heat shield along with their open filter for this engine. Would creating a protective shield for this intake help a little bit? I dont know how else to protect it from the heat its producing..

It's worth trying. Just make sure it's strong enough so that it doesn't collapse from the suction of the engine. K&N is not alone in this and the package sounds good (under throttle) but the cold hard facts dictate that even the old wire and paper tube to the outside served a purpose. I use a CAI but it is enclosed and sucks air from the stock hole in the fender.

I am going to have to draft something in the next few days to create something that this engine will like, and bring in some cold air, because i live in maine, and its freezing here, so i need to take advantage of this while its cold out, but i dont think it will be to hard. Should I use like metal flashing or something?

Flashing might be a little thin. A 460 can make powerful suction. PVC though can handle it.

Don't worry about the suction, if there's "suction" between the throttle body and the air filter you got much bigger problems then hot air. I recommend using some sheey metal or fibergass to fabricate a thin wide duct that will grab air in the gap between the raidiator core support(the metal structure that the raidiator and fenders bolt to)and the hood and route it to a box aroud the filter. There is a high pressure pocket off coold clean air that gathers there, and it is sheilded from rain and other airborn debri by the hood. With the hood closed there is still 1 1/2" there between the hood and core support plenty if you make it 1 1/2 to 2 feet wide.
