Question Radiator addvice.

Hello, I have a '84 full size Bronco with a '76 car 302 in her and the 300 radiator out front. One of my friends was telling me that the stock factory radiators that are a copper and brass mixture with less then 1 inch cores cooled and engine better then the aftermarket aluminum two one inch core radiators. Is that all true?

I was wondering because I am searching for a new radiator because mine has scale build up on the cores and it seams at though that she runs a little hot (190ish) sometimes in the summer time and pukes out coolant into the radiator overflow bottle and sometimes that over fills. Although now sense the weather has changed, she hasn’t been running as hot and no coolant has been getting into the over flow bottle. I was wondering how I can remedy the running hot and puking coolant over into the overflow bottle and spilling over deal.

I thought about putting a electric fan on there. Or a new aluminum 2 core with 1 inch cores. Or both on her.

Oh, by the way I have a stock style flex fan off of a ‘79 Ford ½ ton on her now with the radiator from my 300.

Thanks.

If you are running a 180* t-stat then your cooling system sounds fine. 190* is about what you want. If it starts running at 210* or higher, then I would worry. The coolant puking into the overflow is normal and will happen, it will get sucked back in when the motor cools.

My truck originally had a factory radiator with dual 1" wide core tubes. I swapped it out for a factory 4 tube radiator. It runs about the same temp as before with normal driving, but does keep the motor cooler when towing.

No your friend is wrong. Aluminum is a much better conductor of heat. The brass ones however are stronger then the aluminum with plastic tanks.

Ebay, or you can get a factory copper 4 row from a parts store. The chain stores here list one for your truck for less than $300. I have no idea what's on ebay though so I'd check that out first.

You can use those plastic ties that go through the radiator, but make sure you put some kind of foam around the edges of the fan so it doesn't damage the radiator. You could also use some kind of metal brackets to hang it close to the radiator.

Could I let the inside lip of the core support take most of the weight and then take zip ties and go around the tanks on the rad and then put weatherstriping between the rad and the fan then?
