Electric fan question

I would like to install an electric fan on my 56 which has a stock radiator ( at least on the outside) and I only have about 3 1/4" clearance between the front pulley and the rear of the core. Can anyone recommend a source for a good fan and just how close can the fan be to the front of the pulley without causing problems?, Thanks

I don’t have a direct answer to your question but a variation.

I installed a variable temperature controlled electric fan in my ’56 w/ stock radiator but mounted the fan on the front side of the core. I had placed a six-bladed stainless steel fan with water pulley extension closer to the inner side of the core for better draw.

For me, this setup has a neater appearance and due to the bowed dimensions of the electric fan, I do not worry about clearance issues. In addition, I was able to install an automatic transmission cooler since the stock radiator did not have provisions for one.

1/2" of clearance should be plenty. Most of the mechanical fans are somewhere in the 1/2-1" range from the radiator core surface.

If it is possible use a puller it is more efficient and moves more air. I have a Flex-A-Lite Black Majic Extreme and it measures 3 5/8 inches it has the most cfm for a single fan but I had to for myself move the radiator forward to fit it. I have a 60 truck and was unable to put a pusher which mounts up front due to room just rember the pusher blocks the airflow while at speed.

I used two 12in fans offset to make room for the pulley without the fan blades. I think there is about an inch clearance still.. see pic in my gallery
