Auto shifter problems....HELP!

This is my first post here at FTE and my question is about my recently acquired 1990 Bronco II. I am stuck and need someone to help me think this thing out to fix my problem. Hopefully, someone here has had the same thing happen (I am not really hopeful of that, but it would help in solving the mystery).

The other morning when I pulled into my parking spot and grabbed the auto shifter level (it is on the steering column) to put it into park, the shifter selector just slid back and forth (didn't disengage the truck out of drive) and once I shut the truck off, it wouldn't start because it's still in gear (duh).

I crawled underneath and manually moved the transmission lever back into PARK and it restarts and let me put it back into R, N, D, etc., but it won't disengage the tranny when I move the lever back toward PARK.

I had a co-worker move the lever while I looked at the steering column under the hood and the column linkage moves fine, so I'm thinking it's not in the column that I have the problem.

If it is the cable that goes from the shifter linkage to the tranny lever that's broken, why does it work one way (putting it into gear) but not the other?

Any help solving this would be greatly appreciated!
Mac

Not sure but I think the cable "pushes" the inner cable to go into gear, say from park to drive and pulls on the inner cable to go back into park from drive. That may explain why it only works one way.
Of course I'm going from memory here and I could be wrong on the push pull direction of the lever.

I just changed a 89 over to a manual transmission and removed the cable and its in good shape.

If you find you need a cable and can't find it local you are welcome to the one I have, PM me at my user ID here and will figure out how to get it to ya.

Danr1,

I have not been able to find a cable here locally, can you email me at dmccallpitts@yahoo.com so that we can discuss my getting the spare one you have?

Thanks very much,
Mac
