The block heater is an electric heater. Being plugged in for a few days added to the fact that they tend to "loosten"up on the inside will give you excessive heat. You can replace the cord cap and use a timer in the future so that the heater isn't running all the time. If you are using an extension cord use one as short as possible, and a heavier guage, preferably #12 AWG

The plug is worn out and needs to be replaced. All of the flexing where the wires come out of the molded plug leads to the wires breaking apart and higher resistance, which creates heat. I just replaced mine after having the same thing happen. Snip the cord an inch or so from the plug and hook a new one up.
