i have an AFE cold air intake for my 7.3 and it sits down it the factory airbox and seals off with the hood. is there any way i can get more air thru the factory system that leads to the filter?
In simplest terms, drilling a bunch of holes. The zoo-dad is opening the area next the rad so air can flow from the grille to the area of the air box. I did this long before it was known as the zoo-dad, but it does help a little. For skeletonizing the air box, the most common fashion I've seen is to take a 2" hole saw and remove as much of the box as possible. Sides and bottom can be opened up to allow more air around the filter, this was a cool trick for keeping the air box stock looking but getting better airflow.
Just make sure that it is only drawing in cold air from the grill area. If you raw in hot air, the hot air is a lot less dense, and that limits your power potential.
has anyone rerouted the air intake hose that comes out of the factory box to get it to cooler air or am i better off doing what was suggested earlier in the conversation
Now that is a really nice looking job, but won't there be a problem with driving in the rain and getting a lot of water pulled into the intake? The way the thing is put together from stock, it seems like it is protected from rain because it has to pull the air through holes that would not let lots of water through.
BTW...the opening toward the bottom of the truck that brings air up the channel where the intake is is large enough for a sparrow to get in. I left my truck parked for the summer because of the price of Diesel and when I took it out for a drive, I killed an entire family of sparrows. The light on the dash came on but I figured it was a glitch and drove to the store and back (about 10 miles). When I removed the filter, the little dead bodies were all plastered against the filter with the nest. Easy to clean up, but sad.
