I have a 68 4x4 with a 360. I know the water pump is bad, as I can wiggle the pulley by hand, but I don't think that is the problem. If I let the truck sit for more than a few weeks all the coolant will drain into the oil pan. Very annoying as I have to change the oil and fill the coolant every time I want to use it. I can drive it for a few days and not find any coolant in the oil and as far as I can tell there is no oil getting into the coolant. So it does not do this while driving just when it has been sitting for awhile. What has happened to my truck? Could it be a head gasket or the intake manifold gasket? The truck does not over heat when driving and does not push coolant out the exhaust. Should I just swap in a 390 or try and fix the old 360 that has been rebuilt three times now? It still runs strong so I don't really want to replace the motor just fix it.
Are you finding the oil stratified with the water? IE comes out seperated or as a muddy mix?
As Bill pointed out, head gasket would be a likley option. with three rebuilds with a possibility of being .080 over bored it may have thinned a cyl. wall and is leaking while parked.
The last time it was rebuilt it was bored out to the safe max, or that is what I was told, and yes the oil is muddy. I guess I need to take the heads off and check the cylinders. As I have already thought that I need to replace the head gaskets any way, I don't think this will be any big task. I have done a compression test and they all where about equal with each other at about 150. As for a cracked cylinder wall there is no loss of compression either but then again it does not burn the coolant so it could be slower than I am patient. The truck sat for the last six years before I got to it and the engine was rebuilt right before it was parked. I know I need to change the water pump. It is not my daily driver so I haven't worried about it and haven't driven it since I found the bad water pump. Does any body know how hard it would be to fit this truck with power steering as it sucks to steer?
