I went to get in my truck and started it. the key felt weird like it was stuck in the on position. when i got to work and went to turn it off the key wouldn't turn backwards to off. It would turn forwards like to start it but not off. had to disconnect the battery cable to get it to turn off. also i dont know if this will have anything to do with it, but my steering wheel is loose. you can wiggle it back and forth as in towards and away from you not side to side. My mechanic said i would probably have to replace the whole column to fix that...any ideas on that or how much one costs? (and about the key i did wiggle the steering wheel to try and turn the key to no use.)
Hold on you removed the battery terminal while the engine was running? If so, that is a big no no, you should of just remove the power wires to the coils or injectors instead to make it stall out.
Make sure its all the way in park. Put it into gear then slam it into park. I've seen this before, but if your wheel is really loose this probably wont help. Just some food for thought.
The key issue could be a bad tumbler. This is a common problem with the Foci, I had a friend with the exact same thing in a Focus. Usually though it happens when the key is out and you can't get it in and turn the ignition to pull it. Since the key is in you can at least get the cylinder out and see if there is an issue there. The wheel moving the way it is could be as simple as a loose nut but with the airbag I wouldn't want to go messing with it very much.
here is an update...i took out the ignition switch this afternoon and it turns so i dont think it is the ignition switch. I think it has to do with whatever the part is that the ignition switch turns because i can grab the end of the ignition switch where the key goes in with a pair of biscripts and turn the truck on and off now. I guess thats my new key. I'm thinking i might as well buy a new steering column since it will fix the ignition and my loose steering wheel. I have found one for right at 100.00. it is off a 97 ford. it doesnt have the cruise buttons or airbag but thats fine as i have my airbag and my speedometer doesnt work so no cruise. Is this a good deal do you think considering an ignition switch itself is 50-100 dollars?
