hey all....i have a 1986 ford f350 extended cab with a 6.9 diesel... 3 speed automatic. not sure what type of trans it has. anyways the trans has been slipping when it hits 3rd gear only some of the times.sometimes i have to shift from 1st to 3rd manualy...other times it shifts fine on its own.when its cold it wont get out of 2nd till it warms up...then fine again...at a red light sometimes it wont downshift to 1st.......just second....
what im saying is that it has good days..and bad days. i changed the filter and fluid....still the same..was wondering if there are any vaccume lines goin to trans that might contribute to this..or adjustments....or is it just fried?
as always..thanks for your help...... mike in nj
You have a c6 tranny. There is a vacuum line going from the throttle cable down to the modulator. But if it's out of wack, it will only delay the shifting points, or make it shift hard or soft. But it will still shift. Sounds like you are due for a rebuild. How much stuff was in the tranny pan when you took it off?
the fluid was kinda a redish brown...more brown then red....in the bottom of the pan when i wiped it out looked like used motor oil but there were very little metal shavings. today i had no problem with it....shifted like a new trans....im sure tomorrow will be a different story..thanks again for the help............. mike in nj
Have you tried a specialty additive, such as Bar's Leak REPAIR-IT Transmission Repair? Parts America has it. I would assume that most auto parts stores stock this or similar products. Might be worth a try before rebuilding the tranny. I haven't used this product myself but I have heard of it before. Depending on the problem your tranny has, it might help or it might not. For $10, though, it's probably worth a shot.
no...i havent tried any additive....ill be sure to do that tomorrow....along with checking the vac line....do the modulators go bad???? thanks again....mike in nj

Yes they do. On a gas truck the diaphragm goes bad, and it will suck tranny fluid up the line into the intake and make the engine smoke.
On a diesel it won't do that, since it has a vacuum pump. But you could pull the line loose from the tranny, and if it has tranny oil in the line, then it's probably bad.
