I have this really strange noise coming from the passenger side front of my truck, just after starting, about 5-10 seconds, it sounds like someone kicked a soccer ball at the passenger side front door?? (its a pretty good thump) I've only had the truck under a month and only started it 50 times in that month, the thump noise has happened maybe 5 times, right after starting no moving or anything...... so waddya say??
is yours a really big thump??
mine happens sometimes when its warm, like run 15 mins, shut down for 20 and then start. today it happened after work after sitting all day so it was cold, but when I say cold I mean 50ish F so not really that cold.
Ya - My E-350 does that. Try turning the heater to the off position, and see if it stops. Mine is erratic but its always when the heat is left on , first start up of the morning. It is very loud!!!!!!

I used to hear that sound too...but then I caught the soccer ball one day and didnt give it back...
Under the hood near the pax side fender(between the batt and the blower motor) you will see a dome shaped cannister, this is your vac resevior, and behind that you will see the vac pump. trace the vac lines from there, and look for a cracked one, or a loose connection. You probably have a just slow leak, since in fact your blend door is closing(it is building vacuum). if at any time you notice that your a/c or heat is only coming out of the defrost vents by the windshield, then you have a major leak(no maintained vac pressure)
BTW if yours is a 4x4 then the vac system also operates the hub assembly (hence Jims question)
